Product Description
Swing Check Valve (PN 16)
The Swing Check Valve (PN 16) is a self-actuating, automatic non-return valve designed to prevent reverse flow and protect critical equipment in pipeline systems. Utilizing a hinged disc that swings freely on a pivot, the valve allows forward flow and automatically closes by gravity and backflow pressure. Manufactured from ductile iron or cast iron, it is engineered for reliable, low-maintenance operation in horizontal or vertical-up flow installations.
Key Features & Benefits
  • Automatic Operation: Functions without external power or control systems. The disc opens under forward flow pressure and closes swiftly upon flow cessation or reversal.
  • Low Flow Resistance: In the fully open position, the disc swings clear of the flow path, offering a streamlined passage that minimizes pressure drop and turbulence.
  • Bubble-Tight Seal: Fitted with an elastomer seal ring on the disc, which mates against a machined or coated metal seat in the body, ensuring positive shut-off and zero leakage in the closed position.
  • PN 16 Pressure Rating: Rated for a maximum working pressure of 16 bar (1.6 MPa / 232 psi) at 20°C (68°F), suitable for a wide range of industrial and municipal applications.
  • Robust Construction: Heavy-duty body and internal components are designed to withstand water hammer shock and repeated cycling.
  • Multiple Disc & Arm Designs: Available with standard disc, lever & weight, or spring-assisted designs to control closing speed, mitigate slam, and enable operation in vertical lines.
  • Full & Reduced Bore Options: Available to suit specific pressure drop and cost requirements.
Technical Specifications
Specification Details
Design & Manufacturing Standards EN 12334, ISO 5752 (face-to-face), ISO 5208 (Leakage Rate A)
Pressure Rating PN 16 (Class 125 equivalent)
Size Range DN 40 (1½") to DN 600 (24") (typical range)
Body Material Ductile Iron (EN-GJS-500-7) or Cast Iron (EN-GJL-250)
Disc / Clapper Ductile Iron or Cast Iron, with integrally molded or replaceable elastomer sealing ring (NBR or EPDM standard)
Seat Ring Machined integral body seat or stainless steel (AISI 304/316) insert ring for enhanced wear resistance
Hinge Pin & Bushings Stainless Steel (AISI 304/316) for corrosion-free pivoting action
Gasket EPDM/NBR full-face ring gasket standard, suitable for PN 16/Class 125 flanges
External Coating High-quality epoxy powder coating (approx. 250 µm) per EN 14901, typically RAL 5012
Types & Configurations
  • Standard Swing Check (Horizontal): For horizontal pipelines with upward flow direction. Relies on gravity for closure.
  • Vertical Swing Check: Specifically designed with a counterweight or spring mechanism to ensure proper disc closure in vertical pipelines with upward flow.
  • Non-Slam / Silent Check: Incorporates an external lever and weight or an internal spring mechanism to assist rapid, controlled closure before flow reversal, effectively preventing water hammer and disc slam.
  • Wafer Type (Dual-Plate): A compact, lightweight alternative for limited-space applications (typically PN16/PN40 rated, separate product category).
Sealing Elastomer Options
  • NBR (Nitrile): Standard for water, oils, fuels, and hydrocarbons.
  • EPDM: Standard for potable water, hot water (up to 120°C), steam, and weak chemicals. Excellent for weathering.
  • FKM (Viton ®): For aggressive chemicals, high temperatures, and aromatic hydrocarbons.
  • HNBR, CR (Neoprene): Available for specific chemical or seawater duties.
Applications
  • Pump Discharge Lines: To prevent backflow and protect pumps
  • Water & Wastewater Systems: In transmission and distribution mains
  • Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems: In cooling and heating circuits
  • Fire Protection Systems: In sprinkler and standpipe lines
  • Industrial Process Lines: For general water, chemical, and other media services (compatibility dependent)
  • Irrigation and Water Intake Systems
Critical Installation & Selection Notes
Flow Direction & Orientation: Must be installed with correct flow direction (arrow on body). Standard swing checks require strictly horizontal installation with the disc hinge pin horizontal. Vertical installation is only permissible with specifically designed vertical swing check valves.
Sizing: Valve must be sized for the actual flow velocity. Undersized valves cause high pressure drop and premature wear; oversized valves may lead to disc flutter and premature failure.
Water Hammer Mitigation: In systems with potential for rapid pump shutdown or flow reversal, a non-slam (silent) check valve or an external dashpot is strongly recommended.
Upstream/Downstream Straight Run: Consult manufacturer guidelines for minimum straight pipe lengths before and after the valve to ensure stable flow and proper disc operation.
